What Is Ghostwriting?

I’ve been ghostwriting successfully on and off since 2015. It wasn’t until 2018 that I decided to pursue ghostwriting as a full-time freelance business. Many people assume that ghostwriting is limited only to the music industry. Not quite. Ghostwriting can be used in many different industries from entrepreneurship, web copy, brochures, blogs, film, and publishing. Ghostwriting is writing for a client on a particular topic/subject without receiving full credit.

Most people think it’s strange to not want to receive full credit for your writing. I can see how that can be a bit weird for some people. However, as a ghostwriter, I have the option to receive a lump-sum payment for a project or compensation by milestones. My favorite thing about ghostwriting is that I get to keep a secret identity from my clients. Oftentimes, as a ghostwriter, I’m hired to write about topics that simply don’t interest me such as fishing or gaming. However, if my client is looking for a few blog posts to educate his or her audience about this subject. I’m happy to write it.

What are some of the pros of ghostwriting?

As a ghostwriter, one of my favorite perks is working remotely. Whether it’s a beach resort, hotel room, or the comfort of my bed. I can work on my client's manuscript or blog post. I’m a social butterfly. When I meet an entrepreneur with a book idea or needs to spruce up their online content. It’s a great way for me to earn repeat business. Besides the lucrative benefits of a steady income. Being a ghostwriter has awarded me the privilege to create my own schedule around being a mom. I can write one chapter of a nonfiction book and make it to the kid's PTA meeting. Ghostwriting is a well-respected profession in many industries. Many people admire and respect the craft of writing. So much so that they can’t wait to work with a professional ghostwriter to write their first book.

Are there cons to being a ghostwriter?

Every profession has its drawbacks or headaches. For ghostwriting, the con would be gaining the trust of potential clients. As a professional ghostwriter, it’s important to keep the identity of your clients confidential. This could create a slight issue for clients who want to see samples of your work. What I prefer to do is keep a separate portfolio of my writing online. This helps the client see that I’m versatile and able to write long or short-form blog posts.

Today, ghostwriting is a competitive market. With third-party websites like Contra, Upwork, and Fiverr. Freelance writers are flooding the marketplace with their writing talents. Everyone wants a piece of the big apple. The best way to stay relevant and above your competitors is to keep your portfolio and social media up to date. Your ideal client is looking for your personality, morals and values, and a professional portfolio. The more content samples you create the more clients you have in your inbox.

Final note

As a ghostwriter, I enjoy working remotely from anywhere in the world. I enjoy meeting people from different backgrounds from professional authors to life coaches. Being a ghostwriter has allowed me the opportunity to contribute to over 50 books and countless blog posts for startups tech companies to female digital brands. I’m passionate about storytelling and serving others through the power of writing. I just happen to make a living doing it. Being a professional ghostwriter has opened many doors of opportunity for me. I’m very grateful for this opportunity.

If you’re considering a career in ghostwriting, let me know! I’m always happy to share my journey of becoming financially independent.
